SPECIAL ISSUE ON MALARIA NOVEMBER 2020
According to the World Malaria Report 2019, an estimated 228 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide in 2018, with 93% in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. In 2018 there were an estimated 405 000 deaths from malaria globally, compared with 416 000 in 2017, and 585 000 in 2010.
Approximately 95% of South Sudan is endemic for malaria, with high transmission in the country throughout the year. Malaria accounts for 20-40% of all health facility visits, 30% of all hospital admissions, and is a main cause of death (Malaria Consortium). Malaria is the leading cause of illness and death in children under five years. It also contributes to anaemia in children, and in pregnancy can lead to morbidity and mortality.
SSMJ is making a call for submissions for a jumbo special issue of the journal dedicated to discussing malaria in November 2020.
SSMJ welcomes original research, reviews, summaries and letters to the editor related to the fight against malaria in South Sudan, Africa and the world. We expect to include, but will not be limited to:
- Diagnosis in resource poor countries
- Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of malaria
- Malaria in pregnancy
- Malaria in children
- Malaria in adults
- Malaria prevention strategies
- Vaccination against malaria: feasibility and cost effectiveness
- Malaria epidemiology
By making recent information on Malaria available to health staff throughout South Sudan, we hope this issue will help to prevent Malaria, improve treatment/management of Malaria and reduce deaths from Malaria, especially among children.

All manuscripts must be received by SSMJ not later than May 1, 2020. Authors must follow the Author's Guidelines and the SSMJ team will work with authors of accepted manuscripts in revising and finalizing their work for publication.
